The Bank of Canada Museum has been educating Canadians about the work of the Bank for 45 years. As part of the Communications department, the Museum’s mandate is to provide Canadians with a public space where they are encouraged to learn about the policies and functions of the Bank of Canada and gain an understanding of the Bank’s role in guiding the Canadian economy. It also is home to the National Currency Collection which is comprised of over 136 000 artifacts including bank notes, coins, banking, and production materials.  

 

What you will do  

As a Museum Operations Specialist, you play a central role in delivering a seamless, welcoming, and inclusive visitor experience. Working closely with the Manager of Visitor Services, you act as both a strategic partner and the primary on-the-floor leader, ensuring that every aspect of the visitor journey—from arrival to departure—is thoughtfully designed, well-coordinated, and responsive to diverse needs.

 

In this role, you oversee daily front-line operations, including service delivery, and real-time issue resolution. You develop and maintain clear visitor service standards and operating procedures, ensuring consistency and excellence across all public-facing activities. You also lead the training and ongoing support of front-line staff, equipping them with the skills, confidence, and cultural awareness to deliver accessible, inclusive, and engaging experiences. Collaborating with teams within the museum and across the Bank, you contribution helps ensure that operations align with broader institutional goals. Your work bridges strategy and practice—translating the museum’s mission and commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility into meaningful, high-quality interactions every day

Your responsibilities will include:

  • the development and implementation of museum operations strategies and schedules (including predictive staff scheduling and facilities maintenance needs to anticipate issues before they arise) 
  • proactive monitoring, assessment, and respond to issues affecting the Museum’s built environment (e.g., entrances and egress, public and programming spaces, reception, and washrooms), including liaising with internal teams and external service providers to ensure timely resolution.
  • planning and scheduling daily, monthly, and annual activities related to Museum operations 
  • active participation in development of museum programming, including educational programs and exhibitions; this involves sharing knowledge, experience, and ideas from the visitor perspective, and reviewing plans and contributing feedback based on your subject-matter expertise 
  • management of contracts with third party providers (e.g., cleaning crews, ASL/LSQ contractors, artists and entertainers delivering special programming) 
  • ensuring suitable coordination of activities of other groups in the museum spaces, e.g., exhibition installation, facilities work, or special events that could have an impact on visitor experience 
  • defining, tracking, and maintaining museum programming inventory 

 

This role also requires working regularly on weekends (for example, every few weeks) and holidays, as well as evenings when needed.

 

What you need to succeed

The ideal candidate is a qualified museum professional who: 

 

  • has a strong background of work within a museum or related environment, knowledge of peer institutions, experience working with a team to deliver visitor services and programming, and working with internal and external stakeholders 
  • has knowledge of universal design and accessibility requirements 
    has the knowledge and ability to identify requirements for appropriate programming material and external services for Visitor Services operations, and to make considered recommendations for the material and services 
  • is an effective communicator and inclusive team player who can confidently express their views and actively listen to diverse perspectives 
    strongly believes in developing productive working relationships to create a positive work environment 
  • has excellent organizational skills and initiative, can manage priorities effectively and take the necessary steps to achieve goals 
  • exhibits the curiosity and creativity required to solve problems in an innovative way  
  • can adapt effectively to a changing work environment, within the context of the Bank’s strong focus on innovation 

 

Nice-to-have  

  • Experience managing budgets 
     


Your education and experience 

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in a related field (e.g., education, public history, museum education & interpretation studies, museum studies)
  • 4 years of work experience supervising staff and coordinating services to the public in a museum setting 
  • -or-
  • an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

Language requirement
The Bank’s work environment is conducive to the use of both of Canada’s official languages - English and French.  The position language requirement is Level 5 (Fully Functional).  If a qualified candidate who meets the language requirement of the position is not found, a qualified candidate who does not meet the language requirement may be considered. Hybrid Work Model
The Bank offers work arrangements that provide employees with flexibility, enable high-performing teams, and support an excellent workplace culture. Most employees can telework from home for a portion of each month as part of the Bank’s hybrid work model, and they are expected on site at the Bank location a minimum of 12 days per month to help build connections between colleagues. You must live in Canada, and within reasonable commuting distance of the office.

  • Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $73,511 to $86,484 (job grade 14)
  • The Bank offers an incentive for successfully meeting expectations at  5 to 7% of your base salary. The Bank offers additional performance pay (3%) for those who exceed expectations. Exceptional performers who far exceed expectations may be eligible for higher performance pay.
