What you need to know

We are seeking an experienced Senior Developer to help design and deliver scalable, secure and practical technology solutions in payments, tokenisation, blockchain, digital assets and distributed ledger systems. In this role, you will collaborate closely with the Bank for International Settlements Innovation Hub (BISIH) in Toronto to advance and deliver on their strategic objectives.

You will tackle complex financial technology and payment challenges. You bring a collaborative mindset and play a key role in mentoring and guiding colleagues, strengthening team capabilities and fostering a culture of continuous learning.

The role involves working with a global innovation team, helping shape ideas and technical thinking, and delivering high-quality solutions that advance experimentation in payments, tokenisation, blockchain and distributed ledger systems.

What you will do

You will work collaboratively with our team to help design and deliver scalable, secure and practical technology solutions in payments, tokenisation, digital assets and distributed ledger systems:

  • Develop technology solutions across payments, tokenization, digital assets, and distributed ledger systems
  • Contribute to solution architecture and technical design for payment flows, settlement, tokenized assets, ledger integrations, smart contracts, wallets, and digital finance platforms
  • Design, build, and maintain high-quality backend services, APIs, integration layers, and core platform components
  • Develop prototypes and production-ready solutions to validate feasibility and support delivery
  • Provide technical guidance on tooling, architecture, and implementation approaches, including the use of DLT where appropriate
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define requirements, solution options, implementation plans, and acceptance criteria
  • Identify technical risks, performance issues, and architectural gaps early, and propose pragmatic solutions
  • Produce clear technical documentation and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Contribute to engineering best practices (code quality, testing, security, observability, and release discipline)
  • Stay current on industry trends (payments, tokenization, blockchain, digital finance) and translate insights into actionable solutions
  • Participate in workshops, technical discussions, and external engagements requiring technical leadership
  • Foster a collaborative, delivery-focused team environment through ownership, knowledge sharing, and support

What you need to succeed

The successful candidate will bring strong analytical and problem-solving skills, sound judgment, and a pragmatic approach to innovation and delivery. They will be self-driven and able to work independently in evolving environments while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams. They will demonstrate the ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and provide practical advice to stakeholders with varying levels of technical expertise.

The role requires curiosity and originality when tackling new technology challenges, balanced by the discipline to prioritise security, operational resilience, interoperability and real-world implementation considerations. The successful candidate will also be able to distinguish between genuinely valuable innovation and unnecessary technical complexity, contributing to sound technical decision-making where requirements may be evolving or not yet fully defined.

As for technical experience we are looking for:

  • Proven experience as a Senior Software Developer (or similar), delivering complex solutions through hands-on engineering leadership
  • Strong programming skills in one or more modern languages (e.g., Java, Kotlin, Go, C#, TypeScript, Python, Rust)
  • Experience building secure, scalable, and reliable systems, including APIs, integrations, event-driven and distributed architectures
  • Solid experience contributing to solution architecture and technical design (service interfaces, data models, integration patterns)
  • Experience integrating applications with payment systems, cloud services, and enterprise platforms
  • Strong understanding of security, privacy, identity, access control, and resilience within financial technology environments
  • Deep knowledge of payments architecture, transaction flows, settlement processes, and messaging patterns
  • Experience designing and integrating ledger-based solutions within payment and financial ecosystems
  • Working knowledge of distributed ledger technologies (DLT), including tokenization, smart contracts, wallets/custody, and interoperability
  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more domains: payments, tokenization, digital assets, DLT, smart contracts, market infrastructure, or regulated financial systems
  • Experience working with external vendors, implementation partners or third-party technology providers.

Nice to haves:

  • Experience with programming languages used in smart contracts including Solidity, Rust, Move or equivalent
  • Experience with token standards, token lifecycle design, smart contract review, or controls supporting safe deployment of contract-based systems.
  • Exposure to payment standards, market infrastructure standards or regulated financial technology environments.
  • Experience in central banking, public-sector innovation, supervisory technology, fintech or financial market infrastructure environments.
  • Some experience with cryptography, HSMs, key management, digital identity or privacy-enhancing technologies.

Your education and experience

A minimum bachelor’s in computer science, computer engineering or a related field with a minimum of 6 years of experience working in the payments or a related technology space. A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Innovative Mindset

We value candidates who demonstrate adaptability, curiosity, and a willingness to learn new technologies, including AI and digital tools. We seek individuals who can think critically about data, question existing processes, and find ways to simplify our work while embracing change and new ways of doing things.
