Did you know? 
The Bank of Canada is the country’s sole authority for issuing bank notes, responsible for the design, production and distribution of Canada’s bank notes. The Bank’s currency operations process in the order of 450 million notes per year on high speed fitness sorting equipment. Data from the operation is leveraged for forecasting, optimizing operations and informing future banknote design. This is an amazing opportunity to work at the heart of this core function of the Bank of Canada which is essential to the Canadian system for bank note circulation.


What you will do 
As the Senior Director of Quality and Operations, you will lead the 90-person team responsible for ensuring that quality is maintained throughout the life cycle of a bank note, from production to efficient distribution to destruction and replacement. You will explore alternative models for our operations, the overall roles of the Bank of Canada and the broader Canadian banknote distribution system, against an evolving retail payments landscape. As Senior Director, you will also seek opportunities to leverage data and analytics to evolve Currency operations, improve efficiency and better manage risk. 


As part of your key responsibilities, you will establish and grow relationships with our key vendors to set direction on strategy, risk management, contracting, and business continuity. You will oversee and nurture our strategic collaboration with financial institution partners to manage and risk-mitigate the operation of the Canadian banknote distribution system. Furthermore, you will be the business authority in the multi-year initiative for the Agency Operations Centre (AOC) infrastructure modernization.


Reporting to the Managing Director of the Currency Department and as a member of the Currency Senior Leadership Team, you will make a key contribution to the overall management and strategic plan for the department. Importantly, you will play an active role in developing employees and the future leaders of the department.


The Currency Department’s Quality and Operations team is distributed across 3 cities, with employees based out of Head Office and the Ottawa Support Centre (OSC) in Ottawa, or one of two AOCs in Montreal and Toronto.


What you need to succeed
You have a strong strategic outlook, with a track record for plotting new directions beyond current practices and systems, harnessing insights from evolving internal and external environments. You excel in developing relationships and motivating meaningful change with a complex group of internal and external stakeholders. You have vast experience in the implementation and stabilization of change programs impacting business models, systems, processes and vendors in an operational environment. These programs have been large and complex with multiple stakeholders and competing priorities. In addition, you have experience in negotiating complex technology agreements with major national and multi-national corporations. As an inspirational leader, you foster a work environment that encourages innovative thinking, open dialogue, and develops the next generation of leaders. Furthermore, you have deep experience of the unique challenges of a high security operations environment.



  • Post graduate degree in relevant field
  • Cash processing experience 
  • Lean Six Sigma certification


Your education and experience
The position requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering, business administration or related studies with a minimum of 10 years of relevant work and leadership experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $166,000 to $207,000 (job grade SO1)
  • Depending on performance, you may be eligible for performance pay for successfully meeting (10 to 15% of your base salary) or for exceeding expectations (25% of your base salary). Exceptional performers who far exceed expectations may be eligible for higher performance pay.
