Take a central role
The Bank of Canada has a vision to be “a leading central bank—dynamic, engaged and trusted—committed to a better Canada.” No other employer in the country offers you the unique opportunity to work at the very center of Canada’s economy, in a diverse and inclusive organization with significant impact on the economic and financial well-being of all Canadians. You will be challenged, energized and motivated to excel in an environment where we are reinventing central banking, renewing ways of doing business and reinforcing a culture of innovation.

As the nation's central bank, the Bank of Canada has four main areas of responsibility: monetary policy, financial system, currency and funds management.

For more information about these responsibilities, please visit www.bankofcanada.ca/core-functions.

About the position
Each year, through the university campaign, the Bank of Canada hires exceptional undergraduates as Research Assistants, to support the important work undertaken at the Bank. Working at the Bank affords the unique opportunity to work with leading-edge tools at the centre of Canada’s economic and financial system. Research Assistants are employed across the economics and financial departments of the Bank.

Depending on the area in which you work, your role could include:

  • Supporting talented researchers on economic and financial research projects
  • Supporting economists and analysts in the development of policy recommendations within the Bank’s areas of responsibility
  • Supporting the execution, reporting, and risk management of the Bank’s activities in financial markets

Regardless of which area you work in, you will have the opportunity to work with talented staff in an environment that supports continuous learning and development.

Typically, our Research Assistants work at the Bank for a duration of one to two years before pursuing further studies. Research Assistants have gained admission to top graduate and professional programs in Economics, Finance, Business, and related areas, with some choosing to return to the Bank as an Economist or Analyst.

Position Requirements
All Research Assistants must have the ability to collect, organize, manipulate and analyze economic and financial data. You will use tools such as Excel, Stata, R, SAS, MATLAB, RATS, Eviews, VBA, SQL, C++, C, Java, Python, and Bloomberg. Experience with several of these tools is preferred.  Your work supports decisions in the Bank’s critical functions, so accuracy and attention to detail are key to success in the role.

As Research Assistants are typically engaged in several projects concurrently, you also possess the ability to organize your work effectively by setting priorities to ensure follow-through and project completion in a timely manner. As you will work in close collaboration with peers and senior staff, you must have the ability to communicate information clearly.
