About Economic and Financial Research at the Bank of Canada
The Economic and Financial Research (EFR) department produces high-quality, innovative research which can be published in leading academic journals. There are around 100 PhD economists in EFR, pursuing research in fields including theoretical and applied macro, international macro and trade, international finance, empirical banking and finance, banking and payment theory, asset pricing, econometrics, empirical micro, industrial organization, and economic applications of data science. Economists in EFR spend at least half of their time on self-directed research projects and working towards journal publications. EFR is responsible for improving the Bank's research environment to facilitate recruiting and retaining productive researchers, working with colleagues across the Bank to transfer the insights of relevant research into the policy process; and supporting the development of researchers into future Bank leaders.  


What you will do 
As a Senior Research Officer, under the general direction of the Managing Director of Economic and Financial Research (EFR), you play a key role in the EFR Senior Leadership Team, providing strategic direction and leadership for the research work of the Bank. You are a role model of the Bank’s excellence in research, conducting innovative research published in leading academic journals in economics or finance. You enhance the Bank’s research reputation by building strong connections with external academics and researchers at other central banks via a variety of channels, including seminar and conference presentations. Your ability to inspire others is evident in how you coach and contribute to the development of other Bank researchers and create opportunities for others to be successful.


Furthermore, as a member of the EFR Senior Leadership Team you promote the integration of research into the policy-making process. You bring relevant research insights to policy,  ensuring the Bank’s Governing Council and senior leadership is current on frontier research. You bring your research perspective to key policy discussions and projects.

  • Identify and conduct innovative research related to the Bank’s mandate
  • Contribute to the development of the Bank’s research agenda and research-focused conferences
  • Foster staff development, and act as a sounding board to colleagues on research matters. Contribute to the recruitment of researchers
  • Mentor and advise Bank researchers. Support the Bank’s processes to develop and evaluate researchers, comment on staff working papers, and contribute to annual performance reviews and succession planning.
  • Lead research-oriented committees and working groups involving internal and external contributors


What you need to succeed

  • excellent oral and written communication skills
  • proven ability to communicate complex, technical concepts in a concise and clear manner to an audience with a variety of backgrounds and levels of experience
  • active research agenda in economics or finance, ideally in an area related to one of the mandates of the Bank of Canada
  • published multiple articles in top journals in economics or finance
  • ability to develop a strategic, multi-faceted research plan


Your education and experience
You have a PhD in economics or finance, you have tenure at a PhD granting university or equivalent experience, and you conduct research of relevance to the work of the Bank of Canada. An equivalent combination of education and recent, relevant work experience in an area of current relevance or interest to the Bank will also be considered.


What you need to know

  • Language requirement: English and French essential (bilingual) with a minimum starting level of functional (level 4) in second official language. Training may be provided to help reach the required level of fully functional (level 5) in second official language.
  • Priority will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents
  • Security level required: Be eligible to obtain Secret

Hybrid Work Model #LI-Hybrid 
The Bank is conducting a trial of a hybrid working model which provides employees with the flexibility to telework for significant portions of each month. During the trial, employees will only be required to come onsite on those days when they are involved in activities that they or their leader feel are better conducted in person.  For the majority of employees, it is expected that onsite time will range from 5 to 10 days per month, depending on your role.  You are expected to live in Canada, and within reasonable commuting distance of the office. 


Vaccination Policy

  • Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $195,438 to $244,297 (job grade SO1)
  • Depending on performance, you may be eligible for performance pay for successfully meeting (10 to 15% of your base salary) or for exceeding expectations (25% of your base salary). Exceptional performers who far exceed expectations may be eligible for higher performance pay.
