Senior Research Director (Financial Markets or International Economic Analysis)

About the position
The Senior Research Director position reports jointly to the Managing Director of Economic and Financial Research (EFR) and the Managing Director of the Financial Markets Department (FMD) or the Managing Director, International Economic Analysis Department (INT). You play an important role in the Senior Leadership Team of FMD or INT, providing strategic direction and leadership for the department’s research and policy work, and contributing to analytical and briefing activities. And, as a member of the EFR Senior Leadership team that coordinates the Bank’s research work plan, you play an active role in developing a research network to leverage existing expertise and skills, integrate research systematically into policy discussions and enhance the coordination of research. Furthermore, you conduct leading edge research recognized in top field and/or general interest journals in economics and finance.


Your future responsibilities

  • contribute to the development and execution of a Bank-wide plan for economic and financial research
  • ensure alignment between the departmental vision and objectives and the Bank’s research agenda
  • publish independent, original research in leading journals of economics and finance
  • conduct research and policy analysis on identified issues to provide specific, focused and strategic advice to the senior leadership of the Bank
  • provide expert subject matter guidance and leadership to a team of researchers in FMD or INT and to other parties internal and external to the Bank by commenting on research papers and policy documents, acting as a sounding board for peers and superiors, and providing feedback and coaching
  • facilitate communication of the Bank’s research by authoring Staff Working Papers and by helping to organize conferences and seminars
  • develop and maintain a network of productive, supportive research contacts inside and outside the Bank for multiple benefits, including exchanging information, advancing the Bank’s views and maintaining an awareness of important developments
  • represent the Bank on national and international committees and work groups, including interagency public policy development groups


Your education and experience

  • a PhD in economics or finance, with seven years of recent work experience in research of relevance to Canada in the areas of:
    • (FMD) asset pricing, the intersection of macro and financial economics
    • (INT) economic and policy analysis, macroeconomic or international macro/financial


  • in exceptional circumstances, an equivalent combination of education and recent, relevant work experience in an area of current relevance or interest to the Bank may be considered


Your knowledge and skills

  • excellent oral and written communication skills
  • proven ability to communicate complex, technical concepts in a concise and clear manner to an audience with a variety of backgrounds and levels of experience
  • ability to defend an opinion and to consider different points of view
  • in-depth technical knowledge in one or more of the following areas:
    • (FMD) asset pricing, the intersection of macro and financial economics, and financial system functioning
    • (INT) economic and policy analysis, macroeconomic or international macro/financial
  • published relevant research and policy issues in multiple top field and general interest journals in economics and finance
  • ability to provide leadership for research activities by writing and commenting on research papers and analytical notes, demonstrated through at least three years of supervisory experience in an academic setting or as a people manager
  • ability to draw policy conclusions from research and to make research policy-relevant
  • capacity to develop and maintain productive relationships with a network of researchers/academics
  • strong leadership skills with a demonstrated ability to communicate a long-term vision, create team effectiveness, optimize performance, effect change, coach and provide guidance


Language requirement
English and French essential (bilingual) with a minimum starting level of functional (level 4) in second official language. Training may be provided to help reach the required level of fully functional (level 5) in second official language.

  • Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $197,100 to $243,500 (job grade SO1)
  • Depending on performance, you may be eligible for performance pay for successfully meeting (10 to 15% of your base salary) or for exceeding expectations (25% of your base salary). Exceptional performers who far exceed expectations may be eligible for higher performance pay.
