About the position 

We are seeking candidates to join our Banking Operations team! The diverse and inclusive group is comprised of agile teams focused on rapid delivery of value to financial institutes in Canada, and around the world. These operations go on quietly and efficiently behind the scenes—with typically around 2500 transactions a day, valued at about $100 billion.  

 

Within this team you will have the full support of your leader and teammates to grow and further your career through the Bank’s customizable learning & development platform and be encouraged to pursue relevant certifications and/or designations.  

 

What you will do: 

As a Senior Java Developer, you will use your skills to build innovative and sustainable solutions that will enhance and maintain mission critical processes relating to banking operations at the Bank of Canada. This is a hands-on development role which will require seasoned development techniques and collaboration within an agile environment.  

 

More specifically, you will: 

  • Work in a collaborative, agile environment, with opportunities to think outside the box working on a variety of platforms at varying heights in the web stack. 

  • Complete hands-on software development in a Java JEE / Java 8 (Spring) environment 

  • Lead the resolution of complex operational problems by applying advanced level knowledge of the application and related infrastructure.  

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to aspiring developers on the team 

 

What you need to succeed: 
You are a team player, collaborative, quality focused, and a self-starter with a passion for technology. You also have a client-oriented approach when troubleshooting problems and resolving issues related to product, process and tools. 

 

In addition, you have: 

  • Experience with Java 8 development, including Object Oriented design and development experience  

  • Experience with JEE application development (EJB, Servlet, JDBC, JMS, JMX, JTA, JCA or JAXB) 

  • Relational database skills (SQL), including experience with writing stored procedures and PL/SQL using tools such as SQL Plus / SQL Developer 

  • Hands-on experience analyzing and optimizing code and performance tuning across application layers 

  • Experience working in an agile/scrum environment  

 

Nice to have:  

The following additional technologies are actively being used in our development environment. Having them as skills is an asset, otherwise you will have the opportunity to learn: 

  • Web front end development (such as Thymeleaf, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Ajax/JQuery) 

  • Apache Commons library, Drools (or equivalent rules engine), Java EE deployment, log4j, Jenkins, Git, JIRA and DevOPS tools 

  • Java JPA & ORMs such as Hibernate and EclipseLink 

  • Spring Core, Spring MVC, Spring Integration, Spring Security and Bean Validation 

  • Test Driven Development (TDD) and tools such as Junit and Mockito 

  • WebLogic server development and configuration; web server configuration 

  • Hands-on experience providing third line production support of a critical application in a highly available environment. 

 

Your education and experience 

Your combined education and work experience demonstrate that you have the proficiencies and skills for the role.  We are ideally seeking candidates with a relevant degree/diploma and 5+ years of relevant experience.

  • Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $88,505 to $110,630 (job grade 17)
  • Depending on performance, you may be eligible for performance pay. The first tier of performance pay is for successfully meeting expectation, at  7 to 10% of your base salary. The Bank offers additional performance pay for those who exceed expectations (15% of your base salary).. Exceptional performers who far exceed expectations may be eligible for higher performance pay.
