About the position
The Canadian Economic Analysis Department provides high-quality economic analysis, projections and research to support the Bank’s monetary policy function. Within this department, the Digital Economy and Advanced Analytics Division (DEAA) conducts research and analysis related to the digitalization of the Canadian economy. The main areas of research are price-setting behavior, labour market and productivity, internet economy and international trade. Also, we help build new prediction tools exploring the use of machine learning/AI and alternative data (e.g. text data). 

 

Your future responsibilities

  • develop leading-edge research ideas and produce high-quality research papers and analytical notes
  • work in collaboration with colleagues from the Bank on multi-disciplinary projects
  • collaborate with colleagues within the Bank and from other organizations to develop research ideas, as well as produce and disseminate research
  • build relationships with external parties (e.g., government, international agencies and other central banks) to share knowledge, research and analysis
  • conduct policy analysis and brief senior management
  • participate in the conduct of monetary policy

 

Your education and experience

  • a master’s degree in economics or finance with a minimum of two years of relevant work experience  

or

  • a PhD degree in economics or finance 

or

  • an advanced degree in computer science, engineering or applied math with a minimum of two years working in an economic or financial research environment

 

Your knowledge and skills 

  • adept to analyze complex economic issues, diagnose multi-dimensional problems and devise appropriate responses or strategies
  • able to work effectively as part of a team and collaborate across groups/divisions
  • capable to manage multiple and changing priorities under tight deadlines by showing flexibility
  • ability to organize work effectively, setting priorities to ensure follow-through and project completion
  • apt to create new insights, devise novel approaches and make innovative decisions through research information using empirical and/or modelling skills
  • able to communicate both orally and in writing to a variety of audiences and actively participate in meetings with senior-level professionals and make public presentations to a wide range of audiences

 

Assets 

  • knowledge of Canadian data sources and concepts 
  • experience in developing short-term and medium-term forecasting tools
  • advanced programming skills (e.g., MATLAB, R and Python)

 

Language requirement
English or French essential

  • Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $91,662 to $114,578 (job grade 17)
  • Depending on performance, you may be eligible for performance pay for successfully meeting (7 to 10% of your base salary) or for exceeding expectations (15% of your base salary). Exceptional performers who far exceed expectations may be eligible for higher performance pay.

Candidates whose experience and/or educational background may not be at the level being recruited for could be considered for a position within the accelerated progression stream program. The accelerated progression stream is for economists and financial sector specialists and is defined by four levels P1 to P4.  In this program employees acquire the skills over a number of years to reach the working level of a Senior Economist/Senior Analyst (job grade 17).

  • Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $76,544 to $91,661 (job grade P3-P4).
  • During the progression, you are not eligible for performance pay given that performance is rewarded via a faster rate of progression through the salary range.
