About the position
We are seeking interested candidates to join our diverse and collaborative Database and Middleware Services team! 

 

Reporting to the Assistant Director, you will join a key team at the Bank focused on technical leadership, evolution, support, and ongoing maintenance of our database services. Our team is made up of 15-20 members across multiple domains who work in an open-minded environment and are encouraged to experiment and keep abreast of industry evolutions.

 

Within this team you will have the full support of your leader and teammates to grow and further your career through the Bank’s customizable learning & development platform with many opportunities for career development - both inside and outside of the portfolio (certifications, labs, architecture, development etc.). 

 

What you will do
As a DBA, you will support the team by overseeing resolution of database-related technical issues, upgrade existing databases, and prepare patch management strategies based on vendors’ recommendations. This position will be required to follow the Bank’s Hybrid work policy (currently 10+ days a month on-site) and on-call as needed out of our Ottawa office.  
 
More specifically, you will:

  • Install, configure and maintain all supported database software (Oracle Database and Microsoft SQL Server) for High Availability environments.
  • Carry out database performance tuning and analysis.
  • Implement and review backup and recovery strategy to ensure that business service-level agreements are met.
  • Conduct database security administration to ensure that data is only available to authorized users.
  • Ensure data consistency by adhering to data model standards and best practices.
  • Oversee schema objects and perform production migrations.
  • Oversee resolution of database related technical issues.
  • Analyze and monitor system performance to identify major performance bottlenecks in the system and identify the impact of administration tasks on core business scenarios.
  • Collaborate with development DBAs to coordinate database migration activities and disaster recovery testing and enhance disaster recovery procedures.
  • Explore and adopt the use of new technologies and methods.
  • Lead the resolution of complex database issues by applying advanced level knowledge.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to database administrators.

 
Note - The nature of this work will require additional paid on-call support on a rotational basis as well as potentially paid overtime. The Bank offers flexible work hours to accommodate.
 
What you need to succeed

You have strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills with an open-minded approach to experimentation and asking “why”? You are also a self-starter and a great teammate with the ability to work independently and collaborate with a diverse team.
  
In addition, you have:

Experience with Database Administration (as a DBA or similar role) with experience in the following:

  • Oracle 19c and SQL Server 2019 or higher
  • Cloud SQL PaaS Services, specifically Azure
  • Oracle Exadata, Data Guard, RAC
  • Database Recovery Manager (RMAN) with backup/restore and point in time recovery.
  • Datapump tool for database/data migration
  • Concept of Oracle Advanced Security Transparent Data Encryption (TDE)
  • Monitoring database operations with EMCC (Oracle) and SCOM (Microsoft)
  • Postgres SQL

 
Nice-to-have

  • Experience with MySQL, Azure Cosmos DB
  • Knowledge of Commvault
  • Any relevant designations/certifications (OCP, Azure, etc.)

 

Your education and experience

Your combined education and work experience demonstrate that you have the competencies and skills for the position. We are ideally seeking candidates with a relevant education (computer science, etc.) and 7+ years of relevant experience.

Hybrid Work Model

The Bank offers work arrangements that provide employees with flexibility, enable high-performing teams, and support an excellent workplace culture. Most employees can telework from home for a substantial part of each month as part of the Bank`s hybrid work model, and they are expected on site at the Bank location a minimum of eight days per month to help build connections between colleagues.   • Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $108,874 to $128,087 (job grade 17)
  • The Bank offers an incentive for successfully meeting expectations at  7 to 10% of your base salary. The Bank offers additional performance pay (5%) for those who exceed expectations. Exceptional performers who far exceed expectations may be eligible for higher performance pay.
