Did you know?
The Bank of Canada was one of the first central banks to apply a thin film optical security device to a banknote. The security film was produced in Ottawa using state-of-the-art vacuum roll-to-roll coating. Staying ahead of the counterfeiting threat to Canadian currency requires technological leapfrogging and that is what the Bank of Canada has successfully done for more than 40 years.


What you will do 
The Product Development Team (PDT) mandate is to provide the department with a rigorous and timely position on technology for bank notes and quality systems, business-relevant analysis of the performance and production of bank notes as well as the development and recommendation of world class bank note configurations


This position will act as the technical Subject Matter Expert charged with the main informational accountabilities for the team’s portfolio of work that includes:

  • the awareness and contextualization of new and existing materials for bank note production
  • the analysis and contextualization of security performance and threats (understanding gaps and identifying potential solutions)
  • the development and use of methods for evaluating various aspects of bank notes and their usage


More specifically, you will:

  • identify, propose and lead selected complex, multi-dimensional technical projects targeted at resolving security, material or method gaps to support the department’s ability to meet emerging security challenges, material requirements and methodological needs. 
  • propose a consolidated view on security merit and production readiness of security solutions (e.g. applied/embedded security features) and maintainup-to-date information.
  • contribute to the resolution of technical issues that cross business environments and functional areas within Currency.
  • build, develop and maintainlong-term relationships or partnerships with internal/external partners and suppliers to support evolving Bank or departmental needs 
  • demonstrate leadership in project planning and management in a high uncertainty technology development environment. 
  • demonstrate leadership to encourage open and participative debates as well as contribute significantly to the creation of an environment that supports socialization of ideascollection of diverse perspectives and team-based review of work. 


What you need to succeed
This position also requires a demonstrated ability to quickly understand complex technical problems, primarly in (but not limited to) the domain of new materials e.g. optics, thin films, new material processing and characterization methods, coatings, materials-based dynamic optical effects. Hands-on experience in conducting research and leading research and development projects from the lab-scale through to transfer to commercialization is essential.

  • In-depth knowledge of the Currency function


Your education and experience
This position requires a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline (ex. Chemistry, Physics, Engineering) and a minimum of 8-10 years of relevant work experience, including the analysis and contextualization of technology value propositions (understanding gaps and identifying potential solutions), along with experience in project management in a high uncertainty technology development environment. An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.


What you need to know

  • Language requirement: English and French essential (bilingual) with a minimum starting level of intermediate (level 3) in second official language. Training may be provided to help reach the required level of functional (level 4) in second official language.
  • Priority will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents
  • Security level required: Secret 
  • You will work remotely from any location within Canada while the Bank operates under mandatory telework. Flexibility for remote work for the duration of the term may be granted.

  • Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $122,300 to $152,900 (job grade 20)
  • Depending on performance, you may be eligible for performance pay for successfully meeting (7 to 10% of your base salary) or for exceeding expectations (15% of your base salary). Exceptional performers who far exceed expectations may be eligible for higher performance pay.
