The Bank of Canada Museum is both a traditional museum and an interpretive centre. As a public outreach arm of the Bank’s Communications department, the Museum’s mission is to creatively bring the work of the Bank of Canada to Canadians by demystifying the Bank’s key functions, and interpreting Canada’s monetary heritage. By providing an engaging and interactive space, a carefully curated array of the Bank's National Currency Collection, and educational programming for all ages, the Museum aims to contribute to Canadians’ understanding of the economy and their place in it.


What you will do 
As Director, you provide inspirational and intellectual leadership to three teams of dedicated Museum professionals: Interpretation and Outreach, Collections, Visitor Services. You work with colleagues in the Museum and across the bank to advance the strategic priorities of the Museum. This includes the development, promotion and delivery of top-notch content and virtual and in-person programming aimed at raising awareness and understanding of the work of the Bank and its contribution to the Canadian economy. 


As a member of the Communications department’s leadership team, you work with your colleagues to ensure the Museum’s work is aligned with Bank-wide priorities and the Museum’s perspective is integrated into the Bank’s communications plan. You will lead the Museum’s planning for renewal, and steer continued efforts to provide meaningful experiences to Canadians online and in person.


In addition, you will:

  • Oversee the delivery of excellent visitor services and programs that are accessible to all 
  • Provide results-oriented leadership to grow the Museum’s audience onsite and online
  • Oversee the Museum’s stewardship of the National Currency Collection, including robust collections management and conservation practices
  • Build strong partnerships with peers in both the national and international Museum communities, the educational sector, Indigenous partners and other stakeholders
  • Represent the Museum within the Bank by participating in cross-departmental working groups and seeking opportunities to showcase the Museum’s work with employees
  • Lead continued investment in the Museum’s facilities and galleries by implementing strong financial and project management practices
  • Provide coaching and development opportunities for the Museum’s three managers and their staff


What you need to succeed
As Director, you bring significant leadership experience with a proven ability in building high performing and collaborative teams, ideally with a Museum or cultural institution. You will also bring strong written and verbal communications skills and an ability to speak clearly and effectively to external and internal audiences, including all levels of management at the Bank. 


In addition, you have:

  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning with a strong operational track record
  • Knowledge of exhibition development, visitor experience, and collection management best practices
  • Experience in using technology and digital communications channels to tell compelling stories about complex subjects 
  • Knowledge of equity, diversity, and inclusion policies and practices for Museums 
  • Experience working in a large, complex organization and delivering results


Knowledge of the Canadian economy and the role and mandate of the Bank of Canada


Your education and experience
The position requires a Master’s degree in a related field (such as museum studies, history, communications, education), and seven years of experience in a leadership or management role. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. 



What you need to know

  • Language requirement: English and French essential (bilingual) with a minimum starting level of functional (level 4) in second official language. Training may be provided to help reach the required level of fully functional (level 5) in second official language.

Hybrid Work Model #LI-Hybrid
The Bank is conducting a trial of a hybrid working model which provides employees with the flexibility to telework for significant portions of each month. During the trial, employees will only be required to come onsite on those days when they are involved in activities that they or their leader feel are better conducted in person.  For the majority of employees, it is expected that onsite time will range from 5 to 10 days per month, depending on your role.  You are expected to live in Canada, and within reasonable commuting distance of the office.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic that was declared by the World Health Organization, the mandates issued by the federal government, and the direction provided by public health authorities, the Bank of Canada requires all new employees to be fully vaccinated prior to their start date.

  • Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $124,725 to $155,905 (job grade 20)
  • Depending on performance, you may be eligible for performance pay for successfully meeting (7 to 10% of your base salary) or for exceeding expectations (15% of your base salary). Exceptional performers who far exceed expectations may be eligible for higher performance pay.
