Metadata & Information Architecture Librarian / Library Technician

Join our K&IS team
Knowledge and Information Services (K&IS) is a business line within the Corporate Services Department, an internal service department within the Bank’s Corporate Administration function. K&IS provides information resources, services, tools, systems and policies which help Bank staff effectively access, utilize, manage, and share quality information to effectively accomplish the Bank’s business goals. K&IS provides research and reference services; management of the Bank of Canada Archives; acquisition, management and, training on the use, of published data and information resources; advice and solutions on managing corporate records; and delivers support and training related to the Bank’s SharePoint document management system.


K&IS will be undertaking two important projects. The first will support digital transformation across the Bank to reduce inventory of print and electronic content, update processes to eliminate paper records from the outset, and improve the findability of important information. The second will support the Bank of Canada’s ability to easily discover and access numerous data resources by establishing an improved Search/Browse functionality over data resources housed in various repositories.

About the positions

K&IS is searching for two metadata & IA librarians, or library technicians, to support upcoming project work.


Policy, Standards and Processes Team
Reporting to the Manager of Policy, Standards and Processes in the IM Service Centre, you will lead two high profile projects: Digital Information Management Evolution (DIME) and SharePoint Transformation. You will lead, develop and implement metadata standards, formats and application profiles for the SharePoint document management system (known internally as Collaboration Centrale). You will provide direction and participate in project work to ensure the ongoing high quality of metadata within the repository and its adherence to evolving best practices and standards and the Bank of Canada’s Information Management Policy. In addition, you will conduct consultations with stakeholders to aid your ongoing assessment and continuous improvement of existing IM information architectures.


Information Resources and Tools Team
Reporting to the Manager of Information Resources and Tools within the Bank of Canada library, you will focus on cataloguing data resources. You will lead and implement a metadata standard for the Bank’s data resources to ensure complete and accurate descriptions. Your cataloguing expertise is needed to review, describe and establish full access to the Bank’s collection of financial and economic, time series and non-time series, data resources, bases, sets and files. 


Your education and experience

  • master’s degree in information management, library sciences, or records and archives management, or related field and minimum of five years of recent relevant work experience in libraries, information management, data management, or web services




  • a library technician college diploma and a minimum of six years of recent relevant work experience in libraries, information management, data management, or web services




  • or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered


Your knowledge and skills
We are looking for a team player who is an effective communicator, has strong analytical and problem-solving skills and possesses strong attention to detail. You can work under pressure, manage multiple complex initiatives, organize tasks, establish priorities and meet deadlines without sacrificing accuracy and standards.


You have knowledge of the following:

  • one or more metadata schemas and protocols such as Dublin Core, MODS, DDI etc.
  • MARC 21 (MAchine Readable Cataloguing) used for library collection cataloguing
  • thesauri development and maintenance
  • taxonomy management software and search engines
  • metadata interoperability, harvesting and crosswalks
  • information architectures
  • Microsoft SharePoint, or another enterprise content management solution
  • financial and economic data resources
  • data management principles
  • ability to interpret and assess metadata quality and usability



  • general knowledge of the Bank of Canada
  • previous experience working with content management systems and configuring MS SharePoint


Language requirement
English and French essential (bilingual) with a minimum starting level of functional (level 4) in second official language. Training may be provided to help reach the required level of fully functional (level 5) in second official language.
