Entry-level Cyber Security Analysts (recent graduates)

About the position
The Bank of Canada is looking for recent graduates to join its Cyber Security team within Information Technology Services (ITS). This is an excellent opportunity where you will be provided with additional time to grow into your role and develop the skill set necessary to evolve in the position. There may be opportunities for temporary or full-time positions following the completion of this developmental assignment.

Eligibility 
For your candidacy to be considered, you must be a recent graduate of a bachelor’s degree or college diploma in computer science, engineering, cyber security or a relevant field. The completion date for your relevant diploma or degree must be between January 2018 to January 2020.

Your future responsibilities
We currently have positions available in 4 of our teams, where you will be front-line in the application of best of bread practices and technologies to secure the Bank’s information systems.

 

Cyber Security Assessment Team (2 positions available)
You will contribute to defending a key piece of Canada’s critical financial infrastructure against increasing cyber security threats. Your role will be centered on security assessments of either new technologies or of existing information systems at the Bank. Security assessments include the use of automated vulnerability scanning tools, in-depth analysis of scan results, documentation reviews, interviews and other forms of manual testing to fully assess the security of solutions. Security assessments at the Bank include tasks such as vulnerability assessment and management, penetration testing and threat emulation. They cover the entire technological stack (i.e. hardware, OS, network, application) and the full breadth of technologies in use at the Bank (e.g. COTS, in-house applications, Cloud, etc.) Approximately 50 per cent of your time will be spent training alongside senior members of the team, and 50 per cent will be spent working as a team member on smaller projects with supervision and coaching from colleagues.

 

Identity and Access Management Team (2 positions available)
You will contribute in the coding, implementation, deployment and support activities of Identity and Access Management (IAM) solutions to manage identities and control access for users of Bank systems.  You will also participate in the research and monitoring of technology developments and industry trends to find new innovative ways to address business objectives.

 

Security Operations Team (2 positions available) 
You will provide vital security services Bank-wide, ensure the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the Bank’s information assets, review and validate emerging threats, follow established methodologies, recommend process improvements, grow new capabilities as required and author clear and concise reports. You use advanced security technologies and knowledge of industry trends and best practices to help safeguard Bank assets and information. You also provide operational support for IT Security Operations systems and services.  

 

Security Solutions Architecture Team (1 position available) 
You will contribute to the evolution of the Bank’s security tools and practices by performing technology evaluations and technical research.  With a forward-looking vision in the cyber security industry you will help determine potential technologies that may be interesting for the Bank to investigate. You will use your technical know-how to test systems for their functionality and applicability with the Bank’s current infrastructure components.  

 

Your knowledge and skills 


Cyber Security Assessment Team (Job Grade 13 or 14) 

  • knowledge of networking and operating systems (Linux and Windows), configuration and administration 
  • experience using security scanning tools (e.g., Nmap, Nessus, Nexpose, etc.)
  • in-depth understanding of technical vulnerability assessment and penetration testing (automated and manual tools and methodology)
  • knowledge of web application security concepts, as well as testing tools and methodology
  • understanding of secure code development principles and practices
  • coding and scripting experience

 

Identity and Access Management Team (Job Grade 13 or 14)

  • experience in coding and testing applications with other systems;
  • basic experience in developing and maintaining automation scripts;
  • basic understanding of directories services i.e. AD, LDAP (an asset)
  • knowledge of the cyber security Identity and Access Management industry and trends (an asset)

 

Security Operations Team (Job Grade 13) 

  • basic understanding of some or all of the following: network protocols, TCP/IP fundamentals, Intrusion Detection Systems, security event analysis & correlation, log, network & system forensic investigation techniques, and malware triage and reverse engineering
  • the ability to manage and configure complex Windows, Unix or security appliances
  • basic skills in gathering and documenting business and functional requirements toward the implementation of infrastructure security access controls & technologies and configuration and optimization of security tools

 

Security Solutions Architecture Team (Job Grade 13)

  • basic understanding of some or all of the following: network protocols, TCP/IP fundamentals and network security technologies (e.g., secure remote access, web access management, network firewalls, filtering routers, authentication mechanisms, IPSEC VPN, server hardening)
  • basic skill the either Windows or Linux systems administration 
  • knowledge of the cyber security industry and trends

 

General requirements

  • excellent report writing skills
  • proficiency in the use of common Office software tools (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • ability to communicate effectively with others
  • self-starter, team player and innovative problem solver 

 

Assets 

  • relevant industry certifications (e.g. CISPP) 
  • specialized education in the Cyber Security field  
  • relevant industry certifications (e.g., Global Information Assurance Certification, Offensive Security), specialized education in the cyber security field  
  • participation in ethical hacking competitions, capture-the-flag events, bug bounty programs or other activities related to cyber security assessment
  • in-depth understanding of information security concepts (e.g., CIA Triad, vulnerability, threat, asset, safeguard, risk, Common Vulnerability Scoring System, disaster recovery, etc.)
  • ability to do research on security vulnerabilities, exploits and mitigation strategies

 

Language requirement
English or French essential

Job Grade 13

  • Starting salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $56,300 to $66,200 (job grade 13)
  • Depending on performance, you may be eligible for performance pay for successfully meeting (3 to 5% of your base salary) or for exceeding expectations (7% of your base salary).  Exceptional performers who far exceed expectations may be eligible for higher performance pay.

 

Job Grade 14

  • Starting salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $62,500 to $73,500 (job grade 14)
  • Depending on performance, you may be eligible for performance pay for successfully meeting (5 to 7% of your base salary) or for exceeding expectations (10% of your base salary).  Exceptional performers who far exceed expectations may be eligible for higher performance pay.
