Interested in launching your career through a rotation?
We are seeking an early-career economist to join the Rotation Program in the Canadian Economic Analysis (CEA) department. This structured program offers a broad experience across CEA while allowing you to contribute from the outset to high-impact analysis that informs monetary policy. Through the rotation, you will learn how economists at the Bank assess economic conditions in Canada, develop the economic outlook, and provide timely advice to support monetary policy decisions.Depending on your placement, you could assess and forecast key economic developments, contribute to staff economic projections or work with economists and researchers on rigorous, policy-relevant research that advances the understanding of the Canadian economy and contributes to the broader economics literature.You could also help develop the data, models, and analytical tools used across the department. You will turn complex economic information into clear briefings, research, and analytical products for senior management and Governing Council. After completing the rotation, you will be placed permanently in one division, where you can build on the expertise and relationships developed through the program.

 

What you will do

In this role, you will prepare and deliver insightful briefings to senior management and transform complex economic data into clear, actionable insights. Your analysis will help inform decisions that affect Canada’s economy. You will contribute to the Bank’s publications, including staff analytical papers and major reports like the Monetary Policy Report. 


You will have opportunities to spend time on professional development. Whether it’s learning new software or exploring recent economic theories, continuous learning is a part of the role.
As an economist in the Canadian Economic Analysis (CEA) department, you will conduct economic analysis and research that support the Bank’s assessment of the Canadian economy and inform monetary policy advice. 

 

Examples of analytical work include:

  • Designing new models and tools to monitor and forecast economic conditions
  • Contributing to staff economic projections using large-scale macroeconomic models
  • Analyzing information gathered through business and consumer surveys, regional outreach, and consultations to identify emerging economic trends and assess risks to the Canadian economic outlook
  • Assessing the implications of major structural changes in the Canadian economy, such as demographic shifts, for growth, productivity, inflation, and the conduct of monetary policy
  • Collaborating with economists and researchers on rigorous, longer-term research that advances the understanding of the Canadian economy and contributes to the broader economics literature
  • Examining fundamental questions in monetary economics, including the design of Canada’s monetary policy framework

 

What you need to succeed
You have the ability to initiate and carry out rigorous research and analytical projects, and to use data and quantitative methods, including econometrics and time-series analysis, to develop evidence-based policy advice. You bring strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate alternatives and develop innovative solutions.

 

You demonstrate a high degree of intellectual curiosity and a commitment to continuous learning and self-development. You proactively identify emerging opportunities and translate them into forward-looking model development plans.


You collaborate effectively across teams and contribute to shared objectives. You are able to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and ensure timely completion. You also have strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly to varied audiences.

 

Nice-to-have 

  • Proficiency in programming with tools like Python, R, Stata, SQL, MATLAB, EViews, etc.
  • Experience applying AI tools and methodologies to economic analysis, modelling, data processing, coding, and policy-relevant research
  • Familiarity with Canadian data sources and concepts

 

Your education and experience
The position requires a master’s degree in economics or finance.

Language requirement

The Bank’s work environment is conducive to the use of both of Canada’s official languages - English and French. Hybrid Work Model
The Bank offers work arrangements that provide employees with flexibility, enable high-performing teams, and support an excellent workplace culture. Most employees can telework from home for a portion of each month as part of the Bank’s hybrid work model, and they are expected on site at the Bank location a minimum of 12 days per month to help build connections between colleagues. You must live in Canada, and within reasonable commuting distance of the office.

Economist

  • Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $78,389 to $111,050 (job grade P1-P4).
  • During the progression, you are not eligible for performance pay. Instead performance is rewarded via a faster rate of progression through the salary range.
