About the position
The Director, Bank Note Development (BDT) leads a team of technical specialists and developers who define the technical specifications for Canadian banknotes. The team is responsible for understanding user requirements and counterfeiting threats, evaluating new technologies in the market, developing new security features with external collaborators and analyzing the circulation performance of issued bank notes. Under the leadership of the Director of BDT, the team is responsible for developing banknote technical designs to stay one step ahead of counterfeiting and that are fit for purpose in the Canadian circulation environment.

 

Your future responsibilities

  • lead, inspire and support the development of a diverse product development team (engineers, R&D scientists, project managers, data scientist)
  • provide overall intellectual leadership, strategic leadership and program management rigor to the BDT
  • maintain and build relationships with currency industry suppliers, research institutes and academia, manufacturers of banknote processing equipment, and other central banks.
  • oversee projects to continually assess new security features in the market and integrate into banknote designs, including:
    • industry outreach; industrial-scale integration and manufacturability testing; end-user security, durability and functionality testing
  • work closely with project team that issues new banknotes, with accountability for:
    • recommending new features and functionality; developing banknote technical specifications, in collaboration with suppliers; leading transition from development into production
  • provide analytic and technical support to Currency Operations, who operate used-note fitness sorting facilities as part of the banknote distribution system across Canada, including:
    • analysis of the quality of notes in circulation and the performance of Bank of Canada high-speed sorting equipment; evaluation and specification of new fitness and authentication sensors in the market
  • oversee an R&D portfolio of security features in earlier stages of development with external collaborators, and the associated intellectual property portfolio
  • work closely and effectively communicate with a variety of stakeholders, including other Currency department teams (e.g. design and issuance, operations, vendor management, external communications), internal service providers (e.g. legal, procurement, finance, IT, audit), external suppliers, and counterparts at other central banks.
  • ensure effective team and program management, through allocation of accountabilities and responsibilities, diligent project tracking and reporting against deliverables, budget and timelines.
  • accountable to the department's Senior Leadership Team for the vision and operational direction of the BPD team

 

Your education and experience

  • bachelor’s degree in Engineering or the Physical Sciences with a minimum of eleven years of relevant work experience, including a minimum of three years of work experience within a management role

 

or

 

  • an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

 

Your knowledge and skills

  • experience in hardware product research or/and development
  • strong leadership skills: experience leading and coaching a research or/and development team to deliver on business outcomes
  • experience coordinating and conducting research and analysis to make business recommendations
  • experience building effective relationships, and managing projects, with suppliers and external collaborators
  • ability to prioritize, negotiate, plan, resource, budget and risk-manage projects
  • excellent oral and written communication skills: experience generating written reports (corporate planning, development agreements, research/analysis papers) and in communicating with a wide variety of audiences (technical, business, management).
     

Assets

  • relevant graduate degree or MBA
  • knowledge of the currency industry
  • background in any of the following: secure documents, authentication systems, printing, roll-to-roll or thin-film manufacturing, polymers, inks, optics

 

Language requirement
English and French essential (bilingual) with a minimum starting level of functional (level 4) in second official language. Training may be provided to help reach the required level of fully functional (level 5) in second official language.

  • Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $135,200 to $168,900 (job grade 21)
  • Depending on performance, you may be eligible for performance pay for successfully meeting (7 to 10% of your base salary) or for exceeding expectations (15% of your base salary). Exceptional performers who far exceed expectations may be eligible for higher performance pay.
