Accounting Analyst

About the position
Under the general direction of the Senior Manager, the Accounting Analyst provides analytic support by recording, analyzing, reviewing, tracking, validating and assessing the transactions and general ledger accounts. You also provide practical advice on the application of policies and procedures to more junior colleagues. These accountabilities support the production of investment records and the financial statements.


Your future responsibilities 

  • continually monitor transactions, adjustments and accruals within a complex and dynamic accounting environment to ensure adherence to Bank policies, procedures and regulatory requirements; ensure that anomalies or continued non-compliance are either rectified or escalated, as appropriate
  • review and reconcile the accounts with respect to current policies and procedures and with a perspective on accounting requirements, accuracy and materiality
  • through continual tracking, analysis, validation and assessment of the accounting functions, ensure that the accounts are accurate, that the transactions are recorded in a timely and efficient manner and completed within deadlines, supporting the internal and external reporting requirements
  • analyze business transactions, understand how they affect operations and develop analytical procedures to assess the results
  • collaborate with key internal stakeholders to ensure the accounting and related departments are managed efficiently
  • participate in development projects to address data collection, recognition and reporting requirements relating to factors such as the introduction of new processes, business requirements and accounting standards
  • participate in the development of rationale, supporting documentation and audit files to support decisions related to regulatory and accounting practices to serve as expert backup and records of decisions
  • understand and monitor systems’ integration between SAP and other key Bank of Canada systems to ensure completeness and accuracy of information
  • participate in the assessment of the electronic accounting systems (such as SAP), including identifying system requirements and participating in upgrades and testing
  • develop and maintain process maps and user documentation supporting the accounting procedures for own area and update these documents to reflect procedural and systems changes
  • coach junior analysts or new staff to ensure that they have a proper understanding of their tasks and are performing them in an accurate manner


Your education and experience 

  • professional accreditation from an accounting institute: Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) 


  • minimum of five years of experience in reviewing month-end closing entries and processes as well as preparing monthly financial statements;


  • an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered


Your knowledge and skills 
We are looking for someone who has great initiative, who can seek information as well as analyze information to define problems and draw logical conclusions. The successful candidate for this position will also need to be well organized to ensure deliverables are met meanwhile being able to identify, consolidate, prioritize issues and translating them into plans to ensure the interest and support of the directors and their teams. Furthermore, being someone who can plan for quality control, be detailed oriented is also key to this role. We need someone with an engaging personality, a solid active listener with effective oral and written communications skills. Finally, advanced computer skills are required in this role to work with spreadsheet programs, presentation software and planning tools. 



  • broad understanding of business processes employed by financial institutions
  • understanding of investment securities, including the ability to calculate security prices, amortization, foreign exchange gains and losses, revenue recognition and reporting thereof
  • experience in working with electronic accounting systems such as SAP
  • understanding of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) or Public Sector Accounting Board (PSAB) standards


Language requirement
English and French essential (bilingual) with a minimum starting level of functional (level 4) in second official language. Training may be provided to help reach the required level of fully functional (level 5) in second official language.

  • Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $77,800 to $91,400 (job grade 16)
  • Depending on performance, you may be eligible for performance pay for successfully meeting (5 to 7% of your base salary) or for exceeding expectations (10% of your base salary). Exceptional performers who far exceed expectations may be eligible for higher performance pay.
