Who we are
The Financial Markets Department (FMD) is seeking a Trader or Senior Trader Analyst for the Foreign Reserves Management (FRM) division in Calgary. The FRM team manages the Government of Canada’s official international reserves. The Exchange Fund Account (EFA) is the largest component of Canada’s reserves and consists of liquid foreign currency assets which are funded by Government of Canada. The Calgary based team co-manages EFA assets and liabilities in accordance with the investment guidelines set out by the Department of Finance and the Bank of Canada.
What you will do
Within this role, you will implement the Annual Funding and Investment Plan through transacting in various money market and fixed securities and cross-currency interest rate swaps.
As for your shared responsibility for the day-to-day management of the EFA portfolio these will includes:
- Co-leading all investment, trading and risk management activities and associated market analysis related to specific segments of the EFA portfolio
- Executing and booking of trades
- Interacting with counterparties to acquire market intelligence, analyze market developments and manage trading relationships
- Leading or co-leading projects to support and improve investment frameworks, trading tools and product knowledge
- Collaborating with colleagues across both operational and market analytical groups internal to the Bank to enhance current trading practices and processes
- Comfortable working with big data sets with an understanding of fixed income securities and portfolio management theory
- Provide regular market briefings and strategic portfolio advice to senior management
- Ability to quickly synthesize broad-based market moves into a simple and concise narrative for senior management
What you need to succeed
- An understanding of:
- Fixed-income portfolio management theory, investment strategies and products
- Central banking and foreign reserves management
- Ability to communicate clearly, accurately, and concisely with internal and external contacts
- Work collaboratively towards portfolio and team objectives by sharing ideas, knowledge and feedback openly
- Possess strong data and analytical skills, offering diverse perspectives and considerations on issues while identifying opportunities to improve past efforts, ultimately enhancing portfolio management, market knowledge, and trading expertise
- A commitment to learning and self-development, as well as the capacity to continuously seek to build on knowledge of portfolio-management practices and financial markets
- Comfortable working with big data sets and relative experience in fixed income trading and/or fixed income portfolio management
Nice-to-have
- Experience in:
- Innovating with data and analytic solutions
- Developing technical workflows that incorporate automation, improve data quality and produce user-friendly results
- Capacity to manipulate large structured and unstructured datasets (i.e. internal trade/market data running numerical simulations and statistical analysis)
- Completion of, or enrolment in, the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Program or similar programs
Your education and experience
The position requires a master’s degree in finance or economics with a minimum of three years of relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Language requirement
The Bank’s work environment is conducive to the use of both of Canada’s official languages - English and French. Although the position language requirement is English or French essential, we do encourage everyone to improve second their language proficiency for future career growth and to contribute towards fostering a bilingual environment.

Senior Trader Analyst
- Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $108,874 to $128,087 (job grade 17).
- Depending on performance, you may be eligible for performance pay for successfully meeting (7 to 10% of your base salary) or for exceeding expectations (15% of your base salary). Exceptional performers who far exceed expectations may be eligible for higher performance pay.
Trader Analyst
Candidates whose experience and/or educational background may not be at the level being recruited for will be considered for a position within the accelerated progression stream program. The accelerated progression stream is for economists and financial sector specialists and is defined by four levels P1 to P4. The program is an apprenticeship where the employees acquire the skills over a number of years to reach the working level of a Senior Trader Analyst at the job grade 17.
- Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $82,202 to $ 106,738 (job grade P2-P4).
- During the progression, you are not eligible for performance pay given that performance is rewarded via a faster rate of progression through the salary range.
