About the position
Reporting to the Assistant Director of DMMS, you will lead the design and development of the technical solution architectures for the products and solutions the team owns and manages. You are accountable for creating architectures and provide technical leadership and guidance for the database, mid-tier platform and integration solutions to meet evolving business and operational requirements and overall client value. Throughout your work, you will focus on continuous improvement using various techniques including automation, integration of tools and changing processes. 

As a member of the Bank of Canada ITS architecture community, you will also work alongside the Enterprise Architects, other Solutions Architects and the information technology community to help review and critique all the initiatives or solutions to ensure they are closely aligned with the Bank’s road maps and best practices. You should also have a broad view of the technology spectrum across IT disciplines and stay abreast with technology trends to evolve our products.

Your future responsibilities

  • participate in all phases of the product development life cycle or operational enhancement, add technical know-how, and update or create best practices, standards and design patterns.
  • play the role of the lead technical authority and take responsibility for planning all activities leading to the development of the middleware, database and integration architecture identify technical issues and risks and define mitigation approach 
  • analyze the current solutions environment to identify deficiencies and opportunities for simplification or automation 
  • define and document the structure, connections and relationships of operational processes, data, applications, integration and infrastructure, facilitate the evaluation and selection of hardware and software technology and product standards, as well as the design of standard configurations and their implementation and migration into operations 
  • research and monitor technology developments and industry trends; assess their applicability, functionality and reliability for the Bank; and recommend technologies that will enhance productivity and the achievement of the service objectives 
  • help the service and product owners to promote the services or platforms the team provides to application or project teams and help them adopt the services successfully

Your education and experience

  • bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering or another related discipline with;
  • A minimum of seven years of overall experience across a blend of information technology and business settings, ideally in a mix of banking, government or mid- to large-size corporations 
  • A minimum of three years of experience in a solutions architect role in organizations with 200 or more employees using various high-availability solutions 
  • A minimum of three years of relevant hands-on working experience with some of the following technology: 
    • Middleware Technology (WebSphere, WebLogic, JBoss) 
    • Container Orchestration and DevOps tool chains (Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift, Git, Jenkin)
    • Database technology (Oracle, MS SQL, No SQL)
    • Integration Solutions (Oracle SOA, IBM DataPower, MuleSoft, Red Hat Fuse)


  • an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered


  • exposure to diverse work environments, with a broad understanding of multiple business sectors, networking, hardware and software technologies and IT security 
  • recognized IT industry certification such as TOGAF, Zachman, ITIL 

Your knowledge and skills 
As an experienced Solutions Architect, you are a self-starter with the ability to quickly grasp the essence of complex issues. You are an effective communicator, able to clearly convey key points, organize content, and write in a style appropriate to the audience and purpose of the document and presentation. You are self-motivated and independent, requiring little supervision and also able to function effectively as part of a team. You will contribute towards creating positive team dynamics by engaging in productive and respectful conversations, dealing with conflict professionally, helping understand the differences and leading a group of technical resources or teams to reach agreement.



Language requirement
English and French essential (bilingual) with a minimum starting level of intermediate (level 3) in second official language. Training may be provided to help reach the required level of functional (level 4) in second official language.

  • Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $92,500 to $115,566 (job grade 18)
  • Depending on performance, you may be eligible for performance pay for successfully meeting (7 to 10% of your base salary) or for exceeding expectations (15% of your base salary). Exceptional performers who far exceed expectations may be eligible for higher performance pay.
