Business Systems Architect

About the position
Reporting to the Director, Strategy Analysis & System Support in the Funds Management and Banking (FBD) Department, you role will be to establish the basic structure of the primary business systems architecture, define the essential core design features, elements and framework required for the creation and the continuous improvement of existing business systems architecture. You will also oversee the business to system knowledge management and when required, provide business authority, advice, and guidance to system development initiatives. 


FBD's business stakeholders include the internal owners of applications, the external owners of applications that are used internally (such as Payments Canada with the Large Value Transfer System (LVTS) and the Automated Clearing and Settlement System (ACSS)), the financial institutions, as well as various development and support groups within the Bank (including ITS).

Your future responsibilities
When you join the team, you will;

  • Analyze the banking technology environment to identify developments, trends, pressures, and threats likely to impact the business application portfolio and recommends the appropriate response.
  • Lead the development of a strategic direction for the business application portfolio of the business line to meet evolving business objectives.  Work closely with the Banking Operations’ Business Architect
  • Work closely with the Payments Modernization Business Systems Architect to evolve the holistic changes required.
  • Provide a stable basis for change and improvement by maintaining and evolving the business system architecture for the Banking Operations business line, including the application portfolio, business application process structure and data flows.
  • Provide leadership in system development initiatives by providing authoritative advice and guidance in all phases of the development methodology cycle to ensure successful deployment of the appropriate business solution.
  • Support Agile scrum teams as required
  • Continuously monitor the banking technology environment to identify opportunities to improve the functioning of the business and the delivery of business services.
  • Lead projects concerning system implementation and / or enhancements ensuring that deliverables are completed on time, within scope and budget.
  • Provide direction and guidance to business system support for the triage and prioritization of business system fixes and enhancements.  Participate to on-call schedules as required.
  • Maintain and strengthen long-term relationships or partnerships with internal and external partners and suppliers (IT, Payments Canada, Financial Markets Infrastructure (FMIs), etc.)
  • Provide subject matter expertise related to financial systems and funds management to internal and external committees 
  • Provide insights and direction in reducing operational risks as required 


Your education and experience

  • Bachelor’s in Business Administration, Computer Science or related field 
  • Minimum of 8 years of pertinent experience with demonstrated leadership in business architecture and analysis for large and complex systems, development of systems strategy and roadmaps, business requirements, systems design as well as in ensuring proper considerations for people, process and technology

You are a confident communicator with great analytical and negotiation skills and you thrive on maintaining and strengthening long term relationships and partnership with a diversity of stakeholders.  You have strong leadership capabilities with the ability to deal with partial information, changes and multiple priorities, 


To perform your day to day work you;

  • Have strong knowledge of Banking operations landscape, particularly related to payment and settlement operations/systems.
  • Can analyze and discern inconsistencies as well as conduct needs assessments with peers to identify business requirements to translate into an IT solution
  • Ability to apply business analysis techniques and structured system analysis techniques in converting business requirements into business system architecture
  • Experience with software development methodologies such as Agile and Waterfall 
  • Experience writing and managing requirements for systems involving user workflow and rule-based processing with elaborated user interface and interaction



  • Knowledge of the Bank’s High availability banking system (HABS)
  • Experience leading business initiatives and contributing to ITS-enabled business projects and programs
  • Knowledge of the Canadian Payments landscape
  • Foundational knowledge in risk management methodologies and best practice
  • Experience in delivering programs within an Agile framework
  • Ability to transform and optimize Business processes using LEAN
  • Understanding of business processes related to the front, middle and back office 

Language requirement
English and French essential (bilingual) with a minimum starting level of intermediate (level 3) in second official language. Training may be provided to help reach the required level of functional (level 4) in second official language.

  • Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $98,200 to $121,300 (job grade 18)
  • Depending on performance, you may be eligible for performance pay for successfully meeting (7 to 10% of your base salary) or for exceeding expectations (15% of your base salary). Exceptional performers who far exceed expectations may be eligible for higher performance pay.
