Business Support and Testing Analyst

The Funds Management and Banking Department (FBD) oversees the funding and investment of Canada's foreign exchange reserves, the management of the federal government's retail and wholesale debt programs and the Bank of Canada's pension fund. FBD also manages the financial risk associated with funds-management activities and provides back-office payment and settlement services from its Ottawa and Calgary offices. 


About the position
As a Business Support and Testing Analyst you will report directly to the Support for Operations Systems (SOS) Manager in the Funds Management and Banking Department (FBD). You will be responsible for delivering first-level business support to the Payment and Settlement Operations (PSO) for end-user applications and automated systems on a variety of platforms and operating systems. This support ranges from answering application-related and business-related questions to contributing to the resolution of incidents and performing application testing.  PSO provides back-office payment and settlement services to various clients including financial institutions, designated payment, clearing and settlement systems, other central banks and international organizations.  


Your future responsibilities

  • provide ongoing support to the back-office team; anticipate and address potential issues
  • troubleshoot and problem solve root cause of application malfunction and escalate when necessary
  • assess, analyze, manage, resolve or redirect application and system support requests 
  • perform integration, user acceptance and sanity testing on a wide variety of banking applications and platforms
  • participate in prioritizing enhancements and fixes to be included in future releases 
  • configure, test, administer and maintain a variety of applications including the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) system 
  • contribute to improvements to support processes, documentation and tools that are key to the team’s business 
  • interact frequently with the ITS groups and serve as the primary point of contact for certain applications and systems during system changes, upgrades or as part of development projects
  • collaborate and communicate with technical and business specialists
  • administer and control access to the business applications


Your education and experience

  • a college diploma in business, computer science or management information systems with three years of experience supporting business applications and/or banking-related business


  • a university degree in business, computer science or management information systems with two years of experience supporting business applications and/or banking-related business


  • an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered


Your knowledge and skills 
As a Business Support and Testing Analyst you have;

  • a strong knowledge of support methodologies, problem-solving approach and analytical skills
  • the ability to easily decipher technical information and can troubleshoot technical and business-related problems
  • make sound decisions and recommend appropriate solutions by gathering information across various platforms
  • adapt and learn quickly to new business needs and can assimilate technical information that will help you determine impacts to the current environment
  • excellent planning and organizational skills enabling you to meet deadlines while performing multiple tasks 
  • solid interpersonal skills and strong client-service orientation 



  • knowledge of structured analysis techniques and development tools as applied to business processes, automated systems and workflow analysis
  • knowledge of Canada's financial system
  • experience supporting multiple business applications
  • understanding of server, and networking technologies and their relationships with business systems 
  • experience performing validation and integration testing
  • working knowledge of Unix basic commands


Language requirement
English and French essential (bilingual) with a minimum starting level of functional (level 4) in second official language. Training may be provided to help reach the required level of fully functional (level 5) in second official language.

  • Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $61,500 to $72,300 (job grade 14)
  • Depending on performance, you may be eligible for performance pay for successfully meeting (5 to 7% of your base salary) or for exceeding expectations (10% of your base salary). Exceptional performers who far exceed expectations may be eligible for higher performance pay.
